"WEEKEND STAR" Board's moment of silence draws allusions to prayer By Rik Davie « The Star Durham District School Board trustees have passed a motion allowing for a minute of silence preceding meet- ings, a move one trustee is calling a "veiled attempt to introduce prayer." Ajax Trustee Melinda Crawford asked in her motion last Monday night that a minute of silence be included on the regular board meeting agenda, before the national anthem. "My reason behind it is that it can be used to think of lost children or a moment of silent prayer," she said. "I think it is a wise use of time." Uxbridge-Brock trustee Nancy Loraine, vice-chair of the board, said that reflection on the job of trustee is a part of her routine. And she doesn't think she needs a moment of silence to help with that. "I try to prepare myself for a meeting sometime before we gather in this room," Mrs. Loraine said. "I would hope, and think, that more than a minute is necessary to prepare for our work here." Trustee Doug Ross charged that the move is simply a covert way of bringing prayer into the board's meetings. Prayer has long been a contentious issue in Durham, "On the surface it seems harmless enough," Mr. Ross said. "But as a Christian, | have a problem with this... and let's call it what it is. Let's make a motion for a moment of prayer before the meeting, and vote on that. This is a compromise | am not comfortable with." Mr. Ross said that despite his person- al beliefs, a public board does not have | prayer as part of their meeting. "I do not sit and suck my thumb because I cannot pray before meetings," he said. "1 do not like the idea of veiling this as a moment of silence." The motion was passed by a single vote margin, and will now become part of board meetings.
