"WEEKEND STAR" Collision with train kills Beaverton man A Beaverton man was killed Tuesday morning after his vehicle was struck by a Via Rail passenger train. Durham Regional Police report that William McArthur, a 79-year-old Beaverton man, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident after his 2000 Buick LeSabre collid- ed with the train around 11 a.m. on March 20. : Police say Mr. McArthur was east- bound on Simcoe St. and was cross- ing the tracks near the Beaverton Arena when his car was struck by the northbound Via Rail train. The impact forced the vehicle sideways and carried it until the train came to a stop at Victoria St. The car was destroyed in the col- lision. The Durham Regional Police Traffic Management Unit attended the scene, and both the train tracks and Simcoe St. and Main St. in Beaverton were closed for a number of hours while officers conducted their investigation. Durham Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the acci- dent, or who has any information, to contact Const. Mark Stone at 579- 1520, extension 5231. Students from across , Durham Region will be participating in Teens Tackling Tobacco, a day long interac- tive workshop, designed to help stu- dents develop strategies for addressing the important health issue of tobacco use among their peers. Teens Tackling Tobacco provides Grade 7.and 8 students with an opportunity to share ideas, while Teens Tackling Tobacco workshop set for March 28 enhancing leadership and communi- cation skills to help them implement a peer-led tobacco use prevention strategy at their school. The average age at which regular smoking begins is 12 to 14 years of age. If students can remain smoke-free until age 18, they will most likely be smoke-free for life. The workshop will feature guest speaker Police Constable Anil Maharaj of the Durham Regional Police Service who will speak on communication and leadership skills. At the conclusion of this event, 51 schools will have participated in this workshop for the 2000-01 school year. Teens Tackling Tobacco will take place March 28 at the Durham District School Board Education Centre in Whitby. Tax time coincides with the last 'months in the school year when your stu- dent funds may be getting low. A big refund may be just what is needed to help out, so make sure that you are getting all the credits and deductions to which you are entitled. Money in your pocket If you are 19 or over at the end of the year, you are eligible for the annual GST/HST Credit commenc- ing with the next scheduled payment. To obtain the money, which is paid in quarterly installments, you have to apply for it by filing a tax return and completing the GST/HST application section of the return. Ontario provides tax credits for low-income tax- payers, which are paid in the form of a tax refund. As a student, you probably qualify. You may be able to get a tax refund, even if you never paid any tax. Not all of your student income may be taxable. For example, the first $3,000 of income from scholarships, fellowships, bursaries and achievement prizes is tax exempt if you are enrolled in a program that qualifies for the education amount. Student loans, of course, are completely non-tax- . able. You can even claim a tax credit on the interest when you begin paying back the loan.
