Whether it will be approved or not remains to be seen. The rec director has set aside roughly $300,000 to replace Birdseye Pool, or to install a public facility such as a splash pad. His portion of the township's capital budget for this year is about $650,000. "There is so much that needs to be done in the township; it's a tough time deciding between the needs and wants," said Mr. Todd. "Yes, people want a pool, but the question is, is there a need?" Mr. Todd, who has been on staff for less than a year now, admits that he was a little disap- pointed to learn that the township hadn't set aside funds to replace the aging Birdseye Pool. "The pool was pushing what, 70 years old, and they realized it had to be replaced but no money was saved? Construction should have begun on a new one the day the old one went out. "There is so much that people want, and it's hard to justify everything." - The push for a new pool so far has the public By Rik Davie Weekend Star Durham Regional Police officers in 26 Division started work in one building this week, and will finish in another. The new 11,000 square-foot North Durham headquarters building was to open its door for business on Hwy. 12 just south of Reach Rd. near Port Perry this week. Controversial from the start - Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships fought to host the site - the new station is not without its drawbacks, even as it opens for use. There are still prob- lems with the water at the site that will take time to solve, and locker space for officers is said to be tight. But 26 Division Inspector Bill Temple says the new building will be a great addition to the community. "I am really looking forward to the move," Insp. Temple said. "l want to let residents know that there is a community meeting room in the new facility for the use of all, and | welcome the com- munity to visit us at the new site." The new station will feature enlarged areas for Criminal Investigation Branch Detectives and, for the first time, 26 Division Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) will have a work area and space for storing evidence. Mr. Todd has included the construction of a new indoor pool in his depart- ment's five-year plan. The pool, expected to cost more than $4.5 mil- lion, will be added on to the Scugog Community Centre. Construction on it is expected to begin in 2005. Money has also been set aside in the 2001 cap- ital budget for designing the new second ice pad for the Scugog Arena, Cartwright Fields and the Scugog Shores Millennium Project, three new parks and play- ground equipment, and the new skateboard park, Unity Park. A decision was recent- WPAN S107 0 I = 21 SVAN 14 ly made to build the skateboard park at the Scugog' Community Centre. Approximately $20,000 has been set aside in the parks and recreation cap- ital budget, which will cover site preparation, including laying the foot- ings and cement founda- tion. There is also about $7,300 remaining in a grant, which will be used to design the park. It is believed that the s rec director skateboard committee has up to $25,000 of their own money to contribute to the cause. The park could cost as much as $80,000. Construction is sched- uled to begin on the park in the spring. Discussions on the capital budgets of all township departments will be discussed on March 26. A final decision will be made in April or May.
