McClelland Weekend Star The Port Perry Mojacks missed a glorious chance to take a one game lead in their best-of-seven series with Lakefield Tuesday night as they squandered away a first petiod lead before bowing 10-4 to the powerful Chiefs. The MoJacks drew first blood in this one, but by the end of the game were drenched in the red stuff, mostly their own. In opening a 3-0 first period lead, the MoJacks seemed to catch the Chiefs flat-footed and disorganized, looking not at all like the defending All-Ontario Jr. C champions or the team that coasted to a first-place finish in the Central League this season with just seven losses in 40 games, including one to the MoJacks. On the other hand, the Mojacks bolted quickly from the starting gate, looking like a team that meant business and ready to give the Chiefs a real run for their money in the open- er and the series. It started just three minutes in when Adam Jones opened the scoring on a bit of a fluke as he banked a harmless looking back-hand off the seat of net- After opening a 4-1 lead, Port Perry falls apart en route to a 10-4 loss minder Ryan Hogan's pants. Less than a minute later, there was nothing flukey about the MoJack's second goal as Andrew Mercer took a perfect centering pass by Jeff Ashton and drilled a low shot that beat Hogan cleanly. And the green and white made it 3-0 just past the mid- point of the period on the power play. Matt MacMaster started the play in the corner by beating a Chief to the puck and he fed to Darrin Forbes on the right point. He waited just long enough for a screen to set up in front of Hogan before unleashing his usual low, hard shot that was tipped into the cage by Jeremy Ritchie. But that was as good it got for the MoJacks that night in the Lakefield/Smith Community Centre. Chief's coach Colin Donaldson, who told The Port Perry Star before the game that his team would continue to stress defense through this series and would not be taking the Mojacks lightly, must have had a word or two with his charges in the first intermission. They didn't take very long to get back in the game, thanks to a Mojack penalty at 1:38 of the second. Just four seconds later, Darren Mahoney drilled a puck behind lan Watson in the MoJack cage. It was the first of three for Mahoney in this game. But the Mojacks still had some spunk left in them as Justin Bennett caught Hogan flat-footed a couple of minutes later to up the lead to 4-1 on a shot from close to the left boards with Ryan McQuade drawing the lone helper on the play. The Chiefs began to reorga- nize about the mid-point of the second and by the time 40 min- utes had been played, not only had they wiped out the 4-1 MoJack lead, they were up 5-4. The back-breaker (game breaker?) as far as the MoJacks were concerned was the goal that tied things 4-4 at 15:71. The Mojacks were on the power play when netminder Watson attempted to handle a puck at the side of his net. The Chiefs Nick Johnson stormed in on him, jabbed the back of his legs to put him off balance and stripped the puck which he quickly slipped into the wide open net. Three minutes later, Aaron Garvey got what proved to be the winner on a long shot that Watson no doubt would dearly love to have back. Perhaps his mind was still on the Johnson goal. With a 5-4 lead to start the final frame and their game at last under control, the Chiefs were not about to allow the Mojacks any breathing room or any chance at all to get back in this one as they went on to fire five more into the MoJack net in the final 20 minutes to emerge with what looked like a convinc- ing 10-4 win. Finishing in first place with 62 points compared to 35 for the fourth-place Mojacks, the Chiefs were odds-on favourites going into this best-of-seven affair. But before the game, Chiefs' Coach Donaldson stressed that his team was tak- ing nothing for granted, and would play the kind of rock- ribbed defense that allowed just 118 goals in 40 games of the regular schedule. The MoJacks during the regu- lar season actually scored two more goals than the Chiefs (185-183) but the difference was the 230 goals the MoJacks surrendered to the opposition. And the Chiefs were the pener vs Lakefield least-penalized team in the league, with 959 minutes, com- pared to 1,404 by the Mojacks who were third in the penalty parade over 40 games." Donaldson also noted that for the first time this season, he was able to ice a line-up free of injuries. "We had a lot of injuries this season, and some bad ones -- knees, shoulders, neck -- but we're okay now and we were able to rest some guys after clinching first place," be told The Port Perry Star. The Mojacks got a scare in the second period when cap- tain Shane Norton went down after blocking a hard shot dur- ing a Chiefs power play. He remained flat on the ice in obvi- ous pain for about half a minute while the play buzzed around in the MoJack's zone and then had to be carefully helped to the bench. He took the shot directly on the knee-cap (with the pad twisted slightly) but was able to return to action later in the period and finish the game. Game Two in the series will be in Port Perry this Sunday night with faceoff at the Scugog Arena set for 7 p.m. Softball registration begins this weekend Got a sports report? Port Perry vs. Ennismore This was certainly a one- sided game. Port controlling the game def- initely made Melanie Thomson's, the goalie, job much easier However, the few shots that came her way were expertly redirected to one of her teammates. Stefanie Thomson was able to fire one past the opponents net just after one minute into the game. Laurie Taylor was strong with her passes giving her two assists for her efforts. Megan Those who registered for softball last season will be receiving an appli- cation form in the mail this week for 'the 2001 season. Moore intercepted a beautiful pass up from defence Kellie Quantrill which added another goal to Port's count, Next was Chad De Costa who outskilled and gracefully skated to a hat trick. Last, but mighty, was Bailey Todd who worked extremely hard and earned a well deserved goal. Hard work certainly paid off for her. James Rickard along with Cody Thomson, with their improved skills, kept the ring out of Port Perry's end, awarding their goalie Melanie Thomson with a shutout. Final score 6-0. The Association, led by chair Rick Lepp, welcomes two new members, Bill Page and Greg Goode, to the executive this year.
