4 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2001 Lost and found: Stolen beagle returned to owners By Chris Hall Weekend Star Much to the delight of the Van Hattum family, a stolen three-year-old beagle has been returned safe and sound to their Manchester-area home. After worrying about the condition of the dog for most of the Christmas holidays - it was stolen from their kennel Dec. 19 - the family was sur- prised, and relieved, when they received a phone call telling them the whereabouts of the beagle. "The people called about 5 p.m. on (Dec. 29) to let me know they had her," said Ray Van Hattum. "I went over and got her right away." While the series of events that saw the dog stolen and later recov- ered still isn't entirely clear, the Van Hattum family is just happy that their beloved beagle has returned. Patching together the story of the Heyes family, who found the dog on their Fingerboard Rd. property (located just off of Victoria County Rd. 28 north of Lake Scugog and Seagrave), and that of another man who called with more information on the animal, the Van Hattum family believe they have pieced togeth- er bits of the little dog's adventure. According to Mr. Van Hattum, one man called to say that he had picked up a hitchhiker on Regional Rd. 21, near the family's kennel. The hitchhiker had a dog under his coat, and told the driver that it was a Christmas gift for his mother, he said. The motorist dropped the man and the dog off at the intersection of Hwy. 7A and Island Rd, said Mr. Van Hattum. From there it is unclear Retail Financing as Low as 0% APR! "The (Heyes) family had her over the Christmas break. They said she was sleeping outside under their trail- er for two days before their daughter caught her and took her inside," said Mr. Van Hattum, adding the dog was fed and cared for very well by the family. A. neighbour of the Heyes family spotted the dog and told them that a similar animal was report- ed missing in the Port Perry area. A check of a recent Weekend Star article, in which the Van Hattum family issued their plea for help in finding the dog, confirmed that the pooch indeed was the missing animal. "Fm very thankful to get her home; everyone here is so happy," said Mr. Van Hattum. Ray.
