ITT. "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2000 - 5 Family shocked at theft of dog from Manchester kennel By Chris Hall Weekend Star Members of a Manchester family were shocked last week to find one of their beloved dogs had been stolen. After a relentless search turned up nothing, Ray Van Hattum, owner and operator of Ray's Beagles on Regional Rd. 21 just west of Hwy. 12, is turning to the public for help. He is asking for assistance in the safe return of a three-and-a-half year-old female beagle he keeps in the family's kennel. The dog was stolen sometime during the late afternoon Dec. 19. "It was during the dinner hour on" Tuesday," he said last week. "I fed the dogs and went inside myself and when | returned outside to check on the dogs again, she was gone." Mr. Van Hattum said the kennel door was unlocked during that time, and that there were no dog tracks in the area. "There were someone's footprints in the snow, but they weren't mine," he said. "It looked like whoever it was looked in a window to see if there was someone there, and then just walked in and took her." The thief walked past a half-dozen other dogs to-the back of the room, and took the dog in question, said Mr. Van Hattum. "Whoever it was knew what dog they wanted. They didn't just reach in and grab any dog or a puppy. They knew what they wanted." The thief then must have walked through more than an acre of snow to get off the property, he added. The dog would not be of much use to anyone for hunting, or even as a family pet, said Mr. Van Hattum. "She's a beautiful dog; she's trained well for us, but she's kept in the kennel for breeding. She wouldn't be any good for hunting." Hopeful for her safe return, Mr. Van Hattum is asking the public for help in locating the lost dog. "If someone notices anyone with a new dog, or just a strange dog some- where it shouldn't be, maybe they could call us," he said, adding there is a reward offered for the dog's return. The beagle is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, and has the identification number "JSFV3F" tat- tooed in her right ear. Anyone with any information is asked to call Ray at 985-9939.
