This is because we tend to make January | a test of will power when what we need is skill power. It is estimated that 750,000 people in Ontario will try to quit smoking in 2001, and many of them will be butting out on January: 1. Yet more often than not, they will resume smoking within a few days. There are many rea- sons why people who want to quit smoking on January | soon find them- selves lighting up again. Party hangovers, post- holiday let down, the arrival of credit card bills, and a return to work may all conspire to break their resolve. But probably one of the major reasons is lack of planning. People wanti- ng to quit smoking should have a carefully thought- out strategy to address such issues and concerns as: What are the withdraw- al symptoms and how do | cope with them? What do | do when I'm under stress? Should | consider using the nicotine patch or other medication? . How do | avoid situa- tions that might tempt me to smoke again? With planning, you can greatly improve your JANUAR NT (NEW YEAR SUNLIGHT LAUNDRY DETERGENT 0 {r 1 WHOLE WASH isk DETERGENT KRAFT DINNER NACARIW § ORSESE 26 § bn a a i el ial Mike's OJ EN i U1 24 20 3d DAV HAN HWY. 7A E | 3 4 Ps § / A 121 KELLOGO'S chances of achieving a smoke-free lifestyle in 2001. In fact, research shows that those who pre- pare in advance and have a strategy in place are twice as likely to succeed as those who do little more than try to quit 'cold turkey' on a certain date. That's why we want you to call the Smokers' Helpline now -- before New Year's -- so that you have the information you'll need to properly prepare. Call toll-free 1-877-513- 5333 and talk to one of our Quit Specialists. You'll get advice, information and support to help you get ready for resolution time. The Smokers' Helpline service is based on an approach which under- stands that overcoming tobacco dependency can be difficult, and it is designed to gently sup- port the smoker through the various stages of quit- ting. Most smokers think that there are only two stages: smoking and not smoking. But the truth is, most smokers move back and forth between five stages -- not wanting to quit; thinking about quit- ting; preparing to quit; quitting; and remaining smoke-free. Typically, smokers cycle through these stages, and have to try several times before succeeding. The slip-ups and setbacks are a natural part of overcoming tobac- co dependency. The Smokers' Helpline has assisted 4,300 callers since being established last April. Regular hours are from 9 am. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and from 9 am. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Service is avail- able in both English and French. And to help those butting out on January I, the Smokers' Helpline will be one of the few public services open on New Year's Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The New Year repre- sents a fresh start, and there is every reason in the world for smokers to want to quit. A well thought-out plan and sup- port from the Smokers' Helpline may make that resolution a long-term reality. Taut political thriller depicts missile crisis 'From page 9 As seen through the eyes of his advisor Kenny O'Donnell (Kevin Costner), the film is a deeply disturbing study of the burden of power, the decisions leaders are often forced to make, and how those things weigh on them as human beings. Often not thought of as a great politician, Kennedy proved to be as gutsy as any president that had come before him with this crisis; but make no mistake, the recollec- tions of the people around him are that Kennedy was torn apart by what the conse- quences of his blockade might be. In a brilliant perfor- mance of subtle power, Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood is astounding as President Kennedy, never resorting to imita- tion or impersonation, instead burrowing deep into the character to cap- ture his soul. Best known for his work in Exotica (1994) and The Sweet Hereafter (1997), both films of Atom Egoyan, Greenwood gives one of the year's best supporting performances, grounding the film with authenticity and honesty. Costner, badly in need of a hit, may not have one here, but he can find solace in the fact he gives his best screen perfor- mance since JFK (1991), and is part of a fine ensemble of actors as opposed to giving yet another big star perfor- mance that seems to work less and less for him. Roger Donaldson, best known for another Costner film No Way Out (1987), another political work, does an amazing job creating tension here because, let's face it...we know the outcome. What | like most about what he accomplishes is that he chooses to focus on the individuals taking part in history rather than history. We understand the stag- gering impact Kennedy's actions could have on the world, but only because the actor and director allow us to see the under- standing, and fear in Kennedy. A powerful, forceful work that stands among the best of the year. NEXT WEEK: THE TEN BEST FILMS OF THE YEAR!!
