Bill 99 received third and final reading in the Provincial Legislature Dec. 20. It allows drivers to use plates issued in Ontario the same year their historic vehicle was manufactured. | "This Bill recognizes the importance of the auto sector and the her- itage and traditions of the automobile in our soci- ety," said Durham MPP John R. O'Toole. "As the MPP for a rid- ing with a strong automo- tive economy, | am pleased with the oppor- tunity to make a small contribution to the preservation of our auto- motive heritage." "Owners of antique and historic vehicles work hard to ensure the restoration of their car or truck is complete in every detail," Mr. O'Toole added. "Displaying year of manufacture (YOM) plates completes the vehicle's authenticity." lan Lavery, of the Model A Owners of Canada Inc, was one of the antique car enthusi- asts who brought their vehicles to Queen's Park in a show of support for Bill 99 last October. Allowing YOM plates makes good sense for the government. Most impor- tantly, it allows collectors to complete their vehi- cles' restoration." Bill 99, also known as the Highway Traffic Amendment Act (Historic Vehicles), 2000, requires that the licence plates be O'Toole in good condition. The number sequence must not duplicate any plate numbers in current use. The Act defines a his- toric vehicle or licence plate as being a minimum of 30 years old and states that the vehicle cannot have substantially changed from the original manufacturer's product. "Private Member's Bills are not often passed by the Legislature. Bill 99 would not have succeed- ed without the support of car clubs and individual owners of vintage vehi- cles," said Mr. O'Toole. "Fans of historic vehi- cles collected names for dozens of petitions and sent hundreds of letters in support of the Bill." The Durham MPP also thanked his colleagues from all parties who backed this legislation. The bill took the rare step of going directly to third reading after it received unanimous support in the Legislature Dec. 14. "It's encouraging to see MPPs get together to back non-partisan legislation that means a lot to those who enjoy antique and classic vehicles," Mr. O'Toole said. Bill 99 will take effect upon receiving royal assent. Look Who's 40! on January 2, wish him a Happy Birthday! Lordy, Lordy, If you see MIKE a Ea A A I. TI HB IIR RIOR BIRO ITI IIIT JPOP 1
