"We're concerned because there have been confirmed cases of polio in the Dominican Republic and Haiti and we want to both educate and reassure travellers," said Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham Region Associate Medical Officer of Health. "It is important that people travel- ling to these areas and abroad are up-to-date with their immuniza- ¥ tions." To ensure an up-to-date vaccina- tion schedule, adults should have received their primary immuniza- tions and boosters for tetanus and diphtheria every 10 years. For those at risk of exposure, polio boosters may also be recommended. In addition to this routine schedule, fully immunized adults can be offered a single polio booster as a precaution prior to travelling to areas where they may be exposed. To confirm your immunization status, the Health Department urges anyone planning a trip abroad, orto areas in the Caribbean and Central America, to see their family doctor for a check of their vaccination records.
