Get inoculated Durham Region Health Department is encouraging anyone planning a trip abroad during the holidays, particularly to the ~ Dominican Republic or Haiti, to ensure that they are properly immunized for polio. According to reports from Health Canada, since mid-summer four confirmed cases of polio have been detected in these countries. A mass vaccination campaign is currently occurring in the Dominican Republic and Haiti will begin a nation-wide vaccination program in January 2001. "We're concerned because there have been confirmed cases of polio in the Dominican Republic and Haiti and we want to both educate and reassure travellers," said Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham Region Associate Medical Officer of Health. "It is important that people travel- ling to these areas and abroad are up-to-date with their immuniza- ¥ tions." To ensure an up-to-date vaccina- tion schedule, adults should have received their primary immuniza- tions and boosters for tetanus and diphtheria every 10 years. For those at risk of exposure, polio boosters may also be recommended. In addition to this routine schedule, fully immunized adults can be offered a single polio booster as a precaution prior to travelling to areas where they may be exposed. To confirm your immunization status, the Health Department urges anyone planning a trip abroad, orto areas in the Caribbean and Central America, to see their family doctor for a check of their vaccination records.
