"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2000 - 1 Special unit catching fewer speeders of late The number of speeding tickets issued in North Durham continue to drop, say police. According to recent numbers released by the Select Enforcement Unit -- special unit formed strictly to patrol the roadyays in Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock -- only 44 motorists were handed speeding tickets last week. While the inclement weather conditions may have played a large role in the decline, police believe that the public is getting the message about speeding. During the week of Dec. Il to 16, the special unit wrote up a total of 44 speeding tickets. A single ticket was also handed out for a moving violation charge and one other fora registration viola- tion. During that week, offi- cers set up speed traps in Scugog on Simcoe St., just south of Scugog Line 3 and on Simcoe St near the Shirley Rd; Regional Rd. 23 by Medd Rd and Regional Rd. 23 by Chalk Lake Rd; and on Regional Rd. 19 by Sandy Rd. In Uxbridge, offi- cers were set up on Davis Dr. by Conc. 6; Regional Rd. 8 by Siloam and by Epsom; and Regional Rd. 21 by Goodwood. RIDE cops seize weapons A Janetville man was one of two men charged with weapons offenses during a routine RIDE check last weekend. Durham Police report that officers stopped a vehicle around 12:20 a.m, on Dec. 15 on Bayley St. east of Church St., in Ajax during a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check. Officers discovered an open bottle of alcohol in the vehicle and, after a search of the vehicle and its occupants, seized three knives, a sharpened sword and a .22-calibre rifle with ammunition. Two men are charged with a series of weapons- related offenses.
