It's enough to put a damper on what meagre bit of Christmas cheer one can afford, eh? Knowing the pile of snow at the end of the driveway's just going to keep growing, and growing. Might as well don a green suit, name the snowbank Mount Crumpet, and retire to the top, there to grumble and fume in a perpetual Grinch-funk. Unless you consider a couple of things: First, you're a Canadian, and can handle anything Winter throws at you, laughing all the while and driving with one hand on the wheel while the other scrapes frost off the windshield. The other is this: These meteorologists don't really know what's going to happen for the rest of the season. They were given the spotlight briefly Tuesday morning to spend more than their usual 15 seconds on the CNN broadcast, making dire predictions. Which is what they love to do; what's the point of being a television weather person if you can't once in a while drop a bomb that will scare the bejeepers out of everybody, and fill them with dread? So take heart, fellow Canucks. In the past couple of winters this has happened - mountains of snow in the early going, making it look like we're doomed to start calling the place Land o' Snow, or something like that - and then January came, and the Great Thaw began. Our advice is to regard the weather people sort of the way we do the Old Farmer's Almanac: Quaint and somewhat amusing, but hardly an authority on matters meteorological. Oh, and bundle up, eh? ---- rt eg RONAN : ON = RENRUTRRRA - NE \\ \ \ THINK THEY'D HOLD THESE THINGS WHEN 17'S WARMER! 8) Julia Chambers sent in this photo of five-year-old daughter Casey, a A A Rs id; A a a op 5 I oH 7% who's clearly delighted with the rings she got for her birthday. BD Be gi 4 They're planning to hold another New Year's bash in Blackstock To the Editor: Blackstock is planning on "Greeting the True Millennium". After last year's very successful Family New Years party, it was decided by Cartwright Fields to adopt this fun event as a small fundraiser. We will kick off the "True Millennium" with lots of fun and spirit. A bonfire will start the night off at 7:30 pm. Blue Jay Sound will be on the ice sur- face with great music. Brad Goslin and his team of horses, Cody and Max, will provide rides - sleigh or wagon, depending on the amount of snow -until around 10:00 pm. Fireworks will greet the real millennium at 10 pm, so the younger folk can go home early if they wish. The fireworks will be fol- lowed by cake and hot chocolate. Skating will continue until midnight. This is a no alcohol event, and we know that everyone will respect our event. Entry will be through the front door of the arena. There will be no dance in the hall this year. The cost of the night is $15 per family of four and $5 single if the tickets are pur- chased in advance or $20 per family of four, $8 single at the door: Tickets can be purchased at Penny's Mini Mart in Caesarea or the North Street municipal office in Port Perry.
