Residents awoke Tuesday morning to a winter wonderland, one that inclg than 35 centimetres of snow in' s and gusting winds that caused whiteouts and drove temperatures far below the freez- ing mark. Environment Canada officials estimated that the storm, which began Monday after- noon and lasted through to Tuesday morn- ing before blowing eastward, dropped approximately 25 centimeties of snow in Durham Region. Up to 35 cm: had reportedly fallen in the northern areas. About 20- cm was reported in the Toronto area. Wind speeds averaged about 40 km per hour locally, topping off at approximately 60 km early Tuesday morn- ing. : "It was certainly a major winter storm, but it didn't come close to breaking any records," said Rob Simpson, a forecaster with Environment Canada. "We certainly got winter started off with a good system, but it remains to be seen if the entire winter season is like this." Another five to 10 cm of snow was expect- ed to fall on Wednesday and Thursday. No snow is projected for the weekend, when temperatures are expected to hover around the freezing mark. There has been much speculation that snow fall in the 2000-2001 winter season will far exceed that of past years. "The jury's out on this winter season," said Mr. Simpson. Please turn to page 7 .
