Police and fire crews were dispatched to Simcoe Rd. near Clements Rd. north of Port Perry at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday. The male occupant in a south- bound 1990 Plymouth Sundance veered off Simcoe into the ditch. Police say the vehicle continued to travel almost a kilometre, taking down mailboxes and crashing over driveway culverts. According to Const. Heather Schafer of 26 Division, the car eventual- ly came to rest against a wire fence. The Traffic Management Unit was on scene to inves- tigate the accident. The man was found to be without vital signs, and a doctor at the scene saw signs that the 62-year-old may have suffered a heart attack. Dead is Paul Chomniak of Lindsay. While a heart attack is strongly suspect- ed of causing the strange crash, police will await the outcome of an autopsy before officially assigning any possible cause for the accident. Road conditions at the time of the accident, while poor, are not suspect.
