| 14 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2000 Will audiences come to see this complex, compelling work? From page 9 Geoffrey Rush, an Oscar winner in 1996 for his performance in Shine (1996) is superb as the Marquis, giving one of the most courageous performances | have seen in cinema history. He chooses to portray de Sade as a complex man, surprisingly bril- liant and blasphemous, loving and sensi- tive, yet prone to acts of evil rage and rag- ing egoism. Rush captures the twisted, incendiary humour of de Sade in his performance, but it is in the moments of despair that his per- formance takes true flight. Raging over the quills and inkpots having been taken from his room, he explodes in anger at his wife, "Don't you understand? I've been raped!!," he screams at her, knowing that the inabili- ty to write down his thoughts will hurtle him into madness. Writing exorcises him of the demons that he believes rage in his mind. This type of performance deserves Academy Award consideration, and it is my sincere hope Rush is among the year end nominees for best actor. What a brave, elec- trifying piece of acting this is from an actor, who despite being an Oscar winner for Shine and nominee from Shakespeare in Love (1980) is still unknown to audiences. Kate Winslet, one of the greatest young actresses of her generation, is strong as Madeline, though I must admit to the dis- appointment of her role being more of a supporting one. At 23, Winslet has demon- strated an astonishing depth in her work, earning accolades for stunning perfor- mances in Sense and Sensibility (1995), Titanic (1997) and Holy Smoke (1999). Here she is every bit as fine as she ever has been, but | wished there were more scenes between her and Rush, because they pos- sessed a crackling intensity. Michael Caine gives a strong perfor- mance as the cruel and hypocritical scien- tist sent to the hospital to find out if de Sade is still writing. Though he considers himself a man of science, he is really little more than a torture master. What is truly frightening about his character is that he believes in his work, which gives the char- acter something of a self-righteous zeal. Watching Michael Caine in this performance and making the comparison with last year's The Cider House Rules (1999), one can grasp the enormous talent of this actor. Kaufman's direction is bold, assured and inventive, but sadly, like The Right Stuff (1983) I am unsure many people will come to see the film. It is dark, full of raging artis- tic creation, at a time when audiences seem to want just to be entertained. Personally | found Quills to be a stunning work of art, but 1 doubt that will bring the audiences into this demanding film. pe a "OUR ENTIRE STOCK LINING, BASICS & MORE 30% OFF OUR REGULAR PRICE - 'OUR SINERIZ] SSN E0167 plollEb] de® INR Is IN [eels IRIN eR FT Nal ers 30-50% OFF OUR REGULAR PRICE FASHION FABRIC 50% OFF OUR REGUI.AR PRICE FABRIC, TRIM & & HARDWARE 30% OFF _OUR REGULAR PRICE OUR ENTIRE STOCK up to 12.99 ea. / metre NOTIONS 50% OFF ~ "OUR ENTIRE STOCK CHRISTMAS Fabric, Quilts, Panels, Trims and accessories 50% OFF OUR REGULAR PRICE Excludes ends and 'Promotional items =F FABRICLAND \ N OUR REGULAR PRICE "OUR ENTIRE STOCK AV {oul |e FLEECE All in « k PRINTS Al ND PL AY IRS) J elds OUR REGULAR PRICE RR TR TR Rs LO TS ~ OF | RE! = PA Ri L 'OUR ENTIRE STOCK Md [ @Y AN I > PATTERNS $1.99 each NO LIMIT *OUR ENTIRE STOCK METALLIC SPECIAL OCCASION FABRIC 50% OFF OUR REGULAR PRICE The areas largest selection Great for fashion and décor!
