Triggering the change were comments by Alliance MP Jason Kenney, also the party's campaign chairman, who told a television reporter that there is room in Canada for private clinics, operating alongside publicly-funded hospitals. : The result was the predictable uproar that often accompanies discussion of our health system, particularly when there's an election in the offing. Liberals and Conservatives lined up to declare that the Alliance has plans to embrace two-tier health care, which would allow those fortunate folks with the funds to obtain the treatment they want, when they want it, without having to join the queue at hospitals, like the rest of us. Alliance leader Stockwell Day's first response was, as is so often the case, to shrug it off, and cook up a smug witticism. He called the attack "the two-tier smear which generates a little bit of fear." : If he hasn't already, we're sure the Alliance leader will learn that Canadians are feeling very nervous about the future of 'medicare, and the right of all to timely, quality treatment, and won't accept flippant replies when questions about it are raised. One good thing: In this campaign searching for a reason to be, it would be great if health care became the leading topic. LETTERS Letter was hurtful to Christians To the Editor: I have never responded to a letter before, but after having read the letter put forward by Kay Fisher Langmuir (Trustee's not anti- Christian, Oct. 27), | felt obligated to respond to some of the comments she made. It is true that Christians are to reflect the characteristic of love, as she proposes. But to suggest that "love" accept things that contra- dict the Word and the Will of God is not correct. She suggests that the "Christian right" is misguided because it holds to principles of righteousness and stands for providing a healthy education to our children, when the morals of today's society seem to be falling apart. As evangelical Christians, we have been called to not only love our neighbour, but also our enemies, and in this way we fulfill the law of Christ. But to accept behaviours or principles that contradict what God has revealed in His Word is to violate the greatest commandment Jesus gave the church. Evangelical Christians must never compro- mise the standards of God's Word, and when standing for truth, must do so in a spirit of love and gentleness. To call evangelical Christians "misguided, negative, fear mongering and hateful, obsessed and a drag on the board's produc- tivity" is not something I can personally leave unchallenged. |too must be vigilant when | cast my vote for trustee, and | would encourage all Christians who read these words to continue to show love, and forgiveness to those who may not see, but to never compromise the standards of God's Word, and vote for a trustee that will do the same. Jacques Nadeau, Nestleton Congratulations on To the Editor: Just a word of congratulations on your redesigned weekly newspaper (Uxbridge Weekend Star) which comes into our area. I know many who accept it as a locally focused journal and find it interesting and informative. It also reflects at least two communities who make up, in my view, one marketplace. ; When you consider also it covers down the Weekend Star to Goodwood and northerly to Zephyr, Leaskdale, etc., it becomes the newspaper of focus in the area.
