"Ontario farmers have watched the bottom drop out of prices for their grains and oilseeds this year, and yields are reduced because of wet weather. Our incomes are likely to be lower than any time in the past 30 years," says Jack Wilkinson, OFA president. "Those are the plain and simple reasons we are highlighting financial issues in the current election campaign," he says, "and the basis for OFA urging farmers to take a forceful approach in dealing with all candidates on these issues.' - OFA's election lobbying document also deals with provincial and federal governments withdrawal from funding the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) program. That program was established more than a decade ago and encourages farmers to closely examine their farms from an environmental perspective. Close to 18,000 of the province's farmers have completed EFPs for their properties. "It appears to be very poor timing for our senior governments to remove its support for such a program when increasingly farmers face close public scrutiny of their farming practices," Wilkinson says. OFA is also calling on the federal government to provide additional support for agri-food research and development, and improvements to services in rural Ontario. "Rural Ontario is an important contributor to Canada's economic wealth, but in recent years has been ignored as urban areas forge forward with improvements to infrastructure for communications and trans- portation," Wilkinson points out, County federations of agriculture across Ontario, along with member commodity organizations, will be using this OFA docu- ment to prepare for all-candidate meetings and individual meetings with election candidates from all parties. "We want all parties to become familiar with the needs of Ontario farmers and accept the responsibility of responding to those needs," Wilkinson says. LAKERIDGE HEALTH CORP.
