4739 IIL vA WEEKEND $4 9 | Ale R" FRIDAY, NOVEMBER AELERN AE . 2000 - 23 Legion Branch 419 begins annual Remembrance Day initiative Poppy campaign kicks off in Port Perry area Volunteers took to the streets around Scugog last weekend when the Port Perry Legion launched its annual poppy campaign. More than 100 volun- teers, including Branch 419 members and veterans, as well as recruits from the Port Perry High School Cadet corps, began their annual campaign on Friday. Poppy boxes have been set up in area stores and volunteers are sta- tioned throughout the township, offering poppy pins for a small donation. Funds collected from the effort, which will run until Nov. 10, will be used to help war veterans and their dependents, the local Meals on Wheels pro- gram, school burseries and to purchase equipment for the Port Perry hospital. More than $14,600 was raised here in Scugog Township during last year's campaign. "It all stays in the com- munity, none of it is used for administration purpos- es. No one can touch that money," said Cathie Ball, the poppy program's co- chairperson. While the program rais- (705) 324-3533 es money for those in need and helps communi- ty organizations, it is per- haps most importantly used to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom so many years ago, said Ms Ball. "That's why we have the life we have today, We can't forget and we can't get complacent. There's not very many veterans left and we still have to remember the sacrifices they made and that they died for something," she said, stressing that today's youth have to be made aware of their actions. To help with that, Veteran Affairs Canada has helped finance the cre- ation of a book entitled 2000 Memories. Written by Shelley Fiset, it can be used as a helpful learning tool for younger students, said Ms Ball. As well, Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held at both the Blackstock cenotaph and Port Perry Legion on Nov. Il at 11 a.m. Parades at both locations will begin at 10:30 a.m. Local businesses and organizations are encour- aged to purchase a cross On hand last week to kick off the Poppy Campaign promotion were local war veterans, from left, Norm Budd, Jim Smitherman, Doug Franks, Geoff Taylor, and Ken Call.
