Combined with an expected increase in grant money from the province, the funds rep- resent a one-time opportunity for increased funding in several areas of the board budget. Trustees heard Monday that 45 schools, including some schools in the north, can now receive increased bandwidth to allow greater and faster Internet access. The move will result in increased computer use by students, and make inter-school activities easier. Cost for the upgrade will come in at about $400,000. The funding for block budgets at the ele- mentary level will see an influx of $120,000, while high schools will receive $40,000. The funding will likely be earmarked for schools with lower enrollments, and whose per-stu- dent grant funding leaves them at a disadvan- tage for many programs. Extracurricular activities will also benefit, board officials said Monday night. A plan to help pay for on-call teachers to take over for teachers who are out of the school on extracurricular activities will get $40,000 in funding.
