-- 4 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2000 DRIVE CLEAN DRIVE CLEAN Port Perry teen finding success in film By Heather McCrae Weekend Star "Rolling. Sound. Speed. Frame." "Action!" These are the words Emily Van Camp, 14, has been accustomed to hear- ing a lot lately. The Port Perry teenager has been making a name for herself in the movies. Emily appears in a CBS mini-series based on the life of Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, airing Nov. 5 and 8. 'Emily plays the part of Jackie Kennedy as a 13-year old in the made-for-televi- sion movie. "It's not a huge role, but a good role," said Emily. She worked with some amazing people, including well-known actors. Francis Fisher, who portrayed Rose's mother in the film Titanic, plays the part of Janet Bouvier, Jackie's mother. And Tim Mathieson, known for his role as the vice-president in television's The West Wing, plays the part of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. "They were all wonderful to me," said Emily. Teenagers from all over North America came to audition for the role of the teenaged Jackie. Emily said that while her first audition went well, "my final audi- tion was terrible." So when her agent Marc Hamou, phoned to tell her she got DRIVE (6 R571 \ I D1°J AV) SR GH AVN 0) JAY) SRG RAV ~ You've Seen the Govemment Ads! "It's a big honour to play such a loved person like Jackie Kennedy," she said. Being blonde, Emily had to wear a dark brown wig, period clothing, "and | had to wear the traditional white gloves Jackie always wore. It was fun." Emily began acting just a few years ago. In 1997 she left home to study ballet at Ecole Superieur de Danse, and attend classes at Ecole Laurier in Montreal. A French immersion student at R. H. Cornish since Kindergarten, she is totally bilingual. She's put her ballet on hold for now and is current- ly studying jazz, hip-hop, tap and other forms of dancing. And last year when she got the opportu- nity to take lessons in choreography, she jumped at it. Before Emily landed the role as Jackie Kennedy she had done two commercials; one for Bird's Eye Fish Sticks, which is being aired in Europe, and another for a grocery store in Montreal. She's been busy through- out the year on other film projects. The talented teenager has done a movie, "Lost & Delirious", which is due to come out in the spring of 2001. In the film she plays the sister of lead Jessica Pare (Stardom) while the other main role is played by Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly). She also just finished shooting for an episode of an Aaron Spelling produc- tion, "All Souls". Emily plays the role of a young ballerina who, after suffering a grave injury, has flashbacks of her life. "| was pleased to do the ballet, and a substitute was- n't needed," she said. And earlier this month, she was on the set again when an episode of Radio Active was filmed in Montreal. Although she's a talented dancer, Emily has her sights set on acting now. "I'm only 14, but | see myself in an acting career now," she said. "I've always loved dancing, but I've never been as passionate about it as I have been with acting. But I'm still definite- ly going to go, to university first." "But it's never a prob- lem," said Emily. "I've always been able to keep up with my studies." With school, acting classes on Saturday, tap and jazz lessons once a week and various auditions, life is busy. Often Emily finds her- self exhausted at the end of the day, "but if you love what you are doing it's definitely worth it" she says. "The money is great but salary isn't the issue.
