The Scugog Shores Millennium Committee has announced the first planting for the Scugog Shores Park and walking trail to take place Nov. I. The committee will be beginning with the trees and shrubs that will form the entry to the waterfront trail from the south parking lot off Water Street at the existing picnic shel- ter. A small celebration ceremony is planned for 4 p.m. on Nov. | to which all store owners fronting Water Street have been invited. This project is the focal point for the Committee's Lake Scugog environmental enhancement and education work. The revitalization of this large stretch of Lake Scugog water- front reaching from Palmer Park Beach south/east to the causeway at Highway 7A will, we hope, encourage greater knowledge of nature and the environment of the Lake Scugog watershed. i The overall goal of the committee is to maintain and improve the environmental health of Lake Scugog. Throughout Ontario lake stewardship programs are working to keep our Ontario lakes healthy and balanced. The committee will be taking advantage of a huge reser- voir of research and a network of knowledgeable lake stew- ards to work on this ambitious program for Lake Scugog. Lake Scugog is fragile and if we are to keep this great economic and aesthetic resource for our grandchildren, we will have to act now. The committee will work with individual property owners around the lake to encourage a greater diversity of nature at the lake edge. In addition a nutrient testing and installation of fish spawning beds throughout the lake will take place. In the Scugog Shores Park and on privately owned shore- line, every consideration will be given to using a wide variety plant species native to southern Ontario. Trees, shrubs, flow- ers and grasses that are known to be food for birds and other wildlife will be used as much as possible, but beauty will be paramount as well. This planting will mark the beginning of the local fundrais- ing drive for the Nature Park. Anyone wishing to contribute should call 985-4746 or look for our brochures and funding forms. Every small donation counts for this beautiful addition to Port Perry and the lake. The Optimist Club of Whitby will again be hosting Meet the Candidates Night, next Wednesday, Nov. |. Each candidate will be supplied an eight foot table, to be set up in the foyer of the municipal building on Rossland Rd. The doors will be opened to the public at 5:30 p.m. Whitby Optimist Club hosts all-candidate meeting to afford them the opportunity to meet you face to face. gamation, taxes, community services and the town's role. a topic for school trustee candidates.
