Clifford Roy Smith, 53, was convict- ed of two counts of fraud in court in Oshawa Monday morning. As part of his sentence, he was ordered by Judge Paul Bellefontaine to pay resti- tution of $80,956 to the York/Durham Heritage Railway Association, and $25,447 to the Pickering Softball Association. He will also serve nine months in jail. A former accountant, Mr. Smith vol- unteered to look after the finances of the two organizations. During that money from both associations. He was arrested and charged last year, and later confessed to stealing more than $100,000. During a court appearance in July, Mr. Smith admit- ted his guilt, and apologized to everyone involved in the incident. According to information filed with the court, Mr. Smith has already paid back $5,500 to the Pickering Softball Association, and has turned over $2,000 to the Railway Association.
