Young William, a 15- year-old rock nut, is assigned by Rolling Stone to cover the band, and for the next few days tours with the group, becoming their friend, but making stronger allies with the young girls who travel with the band. While this is indeed a coming of age film, it is also - about the power of music, and the beginnings of the end of a certain era in music as the 60s music style began to die out and music went off in different directions. | remember Time and Newsweek both declaring in 1975 that Bruce Springsteen was the future of rock and roll, and in truth, they were right: Almost Famous explores the state of music after the death of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, the break up of the Beatles, and the realization of the youth in America that Vietnam was wrong. Hudson, daughter of Goldie Hawn, who deserves an Oscar nomination for her stunning performance as Penny Lane, a loyal groupie who goes beyond the love for music and truly loves Russell, who is attached. I like the films of Cameron Crowe. | like how they sound and how they feel, and I like most of all how they make me feel. His screenplay for Fast Times at Ridgemount High (1982) remains one of the most perceptive studies of high schoolers in the last 20 years. When he moved to directing he brought a fresh, honest sweetness to his work that he made no apolo- gies for With Almost Famous, Crowe succeeds in creating a film about rock and roll that is a dazzling study of the art and passion behind music, .and takes us inside the minds of the char- acters. If the film is a tad pre- dictable, we forgive him for it because it is just so damned exciting to watch and experi- ence. There are fine perfor- mances here from the great Philip Seymour Hoffman, bang-on as the legendary rock critic Lester Bangs who created Creem magazine, and the gimlet-eyed Patrick Fugit, who is nothing short of astonishing as the 15-year- old writer who comes of age on the road with members of a rock band he considers gods... and comes to realize they are ordinary people, in extraordinary circumstances.
