"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2000 - 9 Show's Sept. 23 in Port Perry Hymns will swing when iazz pianist plays church By Heather McCrae Weekend Star Local jazz lovers are in for a treat on Sept. 23. A concert featuring world-renowned jazz pianist Peter Dent and internation- ally acclaimed blues singer Lorraine Foster is being held at Port Perry United Church. Beginning at 7:30, the evening will feature several of Mr. Dent's adapta- tions of hymns and straight ahead jazz compositions, and standards sung by Ms Foster. Many of the pieces to be presented in Port Perry will also be performed dur- ing this year's DuMaurier International Jazz Festival in Vancouver. Mr. Dent, who lives in Vancouver, is. returning to his hometown of Port Hope this month. On several occasions the Port Perry United Church senior choir has made exchange visits to Port Hope. "When we heard Mr. Dent was coming to the Port Hope area for three weeks, we booked him," senior choir director Glenn Taylor said. Mr. Dent and Ms Foster began their collaboration quite by accident. Six years ago, while dropping off some pub- licity material at a church in Vancouver, Mr. Dent was hurriedly conscripted to play for Ms Foster during a Jazz Vespers service, as a traffic jam prevented her from arriving on time. Since that time they have collaborat- ed in concerts from Cortez Island, B.C. to Port Hope. Tickets for the concert, which is being sponsored by Port Perry's senior choir, are $10 each. They can be obtained through the church office at 985-2801, or from any choir member. If you can't make it to the concert, don't despair. Just come on out to church the next day, Sunday, Sept. 24. "Mr. Dent and Ms Foster are returning to Port Perry United Church the next day, where they will be giving us a dif- ferent approach for a Sunday worship service," said Mr. Taylor. At the one-hour service, which starts at 9:50 a.m., three very familiar old-fash- ioned hymns will be done in a jazz for- mat: "What A Friend We Have in Jesus", "pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour" and "Holy, Holy, Holy." The senior choir is also doing an anthem in a jazz format, featuring Port Perry's Kevin Drennan as the boy sopra- no. Whichever performance you plan to attend, make sure you come early to ensure a good seat. All proceeds go to the life and work of Port Perry United Church. Wingfield show's a real scream Rod Beattie brings the popular 'A Letter From Wingfield Farm' produc- tion to the stage at Uxbridge's Music Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 27. It's a rib-tickling comedy about a city dweller who trades in his pinstripes for overalls, and tries to make a go of it on a run-down farm. The production is a fundraiser for the Uxbridge Swim club.
