McClelland Weekend Star Speed and passing will be more important than ever for the Port Perry MoJacks as they start another season of Junior C hockey Sept. 23 at the Scugog Arena. A significant rule change -- the elimination of the centre line for off- side passes -- is designed to add more speed and scoring for all levels of Ontario Junior hockey this season. MoJack's general manager Murray Parliament likes the rule change, as it should make games more exciting for the fans. And, he says it could be a factor in the kind of team the MoJacks put on the ice. "Obviously, we are still going to select the best 20 hockey players we can find," he told The Port Perry Star at a training camp workout earlier this week. But, he added that if it comes down to two players with equal ability, the one with the "better wheels" could very well be selected and signed to a playing card. In any event he believes the major- ity of Jr. C fans will enjoy seeing more scoring chances and a more wide open brand of hockey at the Scugog Arena this coming season. About 50 players hit the ice Monday night (Aug 28) for the opening of training camp (the earliest ever camp for the Mojacks tn their 28-year history), all of them hoping to wear the Mojack green and white. And the general manager said there appears to be a lot of guys very anxious to crack the line-up and have their names on a card when the regu- lar season opens on Sept. 23. Mr. Parliament, head coach Tom Thornbury and: assistant Scott Pinkerton will have six exhibition 'games to further assess the talent and help them make their selections.
