Bev Freedman, Durham District School Board's Superintendent for Programs, said that despite long hours put in by her staff to compile the mountains of new documentation needed to qualify students under the increased special education grants, it appears Durham students will not be getting the increased staffing and extra classes the board had hoped for. "According to my information (from the Ministry of Education) we have an approval rating of just under 80 per cent and despite the fact that we submitted close to 400 new students, it doesn't look like we will get any more money," Ms Freedman said during Monday evening's meeting. Boards had to fund their special education needs on guarantees from the province that they would receive at least as much money as they had last year. Despite the introduction of 400 new special education students, funding in the region will be held at last year's levels. Ms Freedman said she wants to know why no funding increase has been passed along to Durham. "We want to know how you can seriously improve your approval rating, and add more kids, and still not get more money," a frustrat- ed Ms Freedman told media.
