WL SIS witha Sa nf LC -----_ ' ty aT a aE rg pr ---- . ~~ - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST 18, 2000 Proud citizen of Sunderland saluted By Rik Davie Weekend Star At the age of 14 in 1925, Ken Harrison came to Canada. Without family or friends, he was one. of thousands of "Barnardo children" sent here to toil on Canadian farms and escape the grinding poverty of their families in England. Last Saturday Ken Harrison celebrated his 90th birthday, surrounded by family, friends and representatives of a grate- ful community, township and province. And the story of how the I4-year-old Barnardo: boy from Yorkshire came to serve his community, his country and his family was told. Mr. Harrsion's daughter Joan (one of three daughters, five grandchildren and one great- grandchild) said that as long as she could remember, her father had helped himself and others. "The man who took him in to his (Sunderland) farm was good to my father," she said. "He was lucky in that way." After serving in the Second World War, Mr. Harrison showed his love for his adopted Sunderland home by using vet- erans' grants to buy the farm on which he had worked for so Community booster Ken Harrison celebrates 90th long. His daughters were all raised there. But Mr. Harrison was far from done, even when he retired from farming in 1967. He entered his second career and became clerk-treasurer of Brock Township, a post he held for more than 10 years. He helped guide the , township through the formation of Durham Region in the early 70s, and left only when he reached compulsary retirement age. Then, Mr. Harrsion turned to community work. As a member of the Sunderland Lions Club, he was instrumental in getting blood donor clinics to come to rural areas" like Brock Township for the first time. Lions president Donald Gordon was on hand last week- end to present Mr. Harrison with a certificate from the club. "Back then, the Red Cross just didn't seem to think there was enough interest in the small towns to make it worth their while (to set up rural clinics)," said Mr. Gordon. "But Ken showed them there was, and worked hard. When you see a blood donor clinic in a small town now, you can thank Ken Harrison for that." Another project Mr. Harrison helped to get off the ground was Meals on Wheels. The program provides hot, home-cooked meals for seniors who aren't able to get out and get groceries on their own. Meals on Wheels is some- 'thing about which Mr. Harrison feels strongly, and he is proud of the fact that at 90, he is still very self sufficient, and still dri- ves. Other community fundraising endeavours have included the library and the seniors apart- ments, and only time has slowed the old Lion... but not much. Even at 90, the spunky kid from Yorkshire can still be glimpsed. "1 don't feel much different than 1 ever did," Mr. Harrison said. "You could not ask for a better place to live than Sunderland, or for better peo- ple." As Mr. Harrison sits comfort- ably and accepts the. congratu- lations of friends and a grateful community, there is a sharp twinkle to his eye and an alert attention to details that tell you This Lion can still roar. 30 Seman tes (3 Dorrogudee ss de WNL Ty Er 9 Ken Harrison, a long-time resident and volunteer in Sunderland, is presented with a plaque by Lions Club president Donald Gordon during a gathering to mark his 90th birthday last weekend.
