After months of planning and preparing by Durham Region and its eight host municipalities, the 2000 Ontario Summer Games will kick off later this week. With more than 3,300 athletes up to the age of 22 competing in 21 sports in 30 venues across Durham, the Games will officially begin Thursday (Augl0) evening in Oshawa with the opening ceremonies. From there, the fun will begin. In Uxbridge Township, residents will be able to take in a number of events. Soccer takes place at Herrema Fields every day from Thursday until Sunday. The games, RAISING THE FLAG: Uxbridge Mayor Gerri-Lynn O'Connor, along with representatives from the township's lawn bowling and soccer groups, were on hand at the Municipal Office last Friday (Aug. 4) for a special flag-raising ceremony to mark the 2000 Ontario Summer Games. Uxbridge Township is one of eight municipalities in Durham Region hosting events for the Games, from Aug. 10-13. which start at | p.m. on Thursday, feature some of the best womens' soccer teams from across Ontario. Lawn Bowling enthusiasts will see some of the best young bowlers competing at the Uxbridge Lawn Bowling Club on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The games get underway at 9 a.m. each day of competi- tion, and finish up on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. And for those who enjoy water sports, a short trip down Hwy. 47 to the Vicdom Aggregates property, just south of Coppin"s Comers, will be rewarding. Waterskiing competitions have been CHRIS HALL / WEEKEND STAR set up in a large lake, formed at the bot- tom of one of the pits, on both Friday and Saturday. Competitions take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both days. Scugog Township will play host to five events: canoeing and rowing on Lake Scugog; lawn bowling at the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club; beach volleyball behind the Scugog Community Centre; and womens' rugby at Port Perry High School, which was a last-minute addition to Scugog. The local events will get underway c on Friday (Aug. 11) when the canoeing com- . petition is held on Lake Scugog, beginning at 9 a.m. It is expected to run until 3 p.m, Lawn bowling will be held on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the clubhouse on Old Simcoe Rd; beach volleyball from Friday through to Sunday at the Scugog Community Centre on Reach Rd. (Durham Rd. 8) from 9 am. to 4:30 p.m; and rowing, which will be held on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As well, womens' rugby will be held at Port Perry High School. Games will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
