"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST n1, 2000 - 23 | ERE Ca FS breat IT'S A Drink your milk - it's never too late! (NC)-It may never be too late to reap the bone ben- efits of drinking milk, sug- gests a new study pub- lished in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. The study found that by drinking three servings of milk each day, older adults could significantly improve their skeletal health. Additionally, the dietary change - which increased daily calcium intake by about 750 mil- ligrams - helped improve the overall quality of their diets. The study examined 204 healthy men and women between the ages of 55 and 85 years, who habitu- ally consumed fewer than 1.5 servings of dairy foods per day. Half the group maintained their normal diets, while the other half consumed three servings of milk as a part of their daily diets. The individuals who drank more milk experienced a significant decrease in bone resorption, which is the first step in maintain- ing bone density. Not only did their bone health improve by drinking three daily servings of milk, but "they also improved the nutrient-density of their diets without increasing the overall fat intake or blood cholesterol levels (low-fat milk was con- sumed). While 'numerous studies have documented calci- um's role in increasing bone density and reduc- ing fracture risk, most of the investigations have used calcium supplement tablets. PORT PERRY natural food sources of calcium -demonstrating not only that dietary changes can achieve desired results, but they may offer additional ben- efits over supplementa- tion. This study clearly shows that increasing calcium intake through food is doable and that it should be the first approach, rather than supplementa- tion. Many popular nutrition supplements tout the value of extra magnesium and zinc, alone or in con- junction with added calci- um. Yet, food sources of calcium provide these important nutrients, and those on the milk diet sig- nificantly increased their intake of both these nutri- ents during this study. Additionally, vitamin D, phosphorus and protein intake was significantly increased in the milk group. It can be quite simple to increase your calciuni intake by consuming three servings of milk " each day. A glass at break- fast, lunch and dinner or one before bedtime (with a little honey and vanilla) can easily be worked into your daily routine.
