"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 2000 - 13 Passing along birthday wishes A regular correspondent with Her Majesty, Dean Kelly wishes Queen Elizabeth a happy 100th A Port Perry man has passed along birthday wishes to England's oldest royal, Queen Elizabeth, who marks her 100th birth- day today. In a letter sent to the Queen Mother just over two weeks ago, Dean Kelly enclosed a block of four Canada Post stamps com- memorating the Queen's 100th year. The tribute stamp showed the Queen holding her favourite flow- ers. He received a letter from Her Majesty's private secretary less than 10 days later, thanking him for his gift and birthday wishes. The letter stated that the gold collector's stamp package had been forward- ed to the Keeper of the Royal Philatic Collection, part of the Queen's private collection. Mr. Kelly also sent Canada Post stamps to Her Majesty last year, when the Queen celebrated her 99th birthday. A resident of Coulcliff Blvd., Mr. Kelly has been corresponding with England's Royalty for more than 25 years now. "Not many people know this, but I've been writing and corresponding with the Queen and her secre- taries for about a quarter- of-a-century now," said Mr. Kelly. "I like to keep her informed of what's going on around here, political issues and other matters, and she thanks me for it." He has received replies from Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Holyrood in Scotland, and from aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia at sea. He has also recently sent her a copy of The Unbroken Line: A History of the Queen's Plate. During her visits to Canada, Her Majesty stayed at the Windfield Farms property just south of Port Perry on Simcoe St. while taking in the presti- gious annual horse race. During his correspon- dence, Mr. Kelly also advised the Queen on con- stitutional matters in February 1981, and recom- mended to Her Majesty that Prince Andrew be appointed as Canada's Governor-General. Ottawa politicians, how- ever, vetoed that idea, and appointed Romeo Leblanc to the position. "I share ideas with her," said Mr. Kelly, founder and president of the Association of Dedicated John's / St. John Ambulance is offering a wilderness first aid course. ° ~~ The course instruct valuable information on cold exposure, bear attacks, burns, gunshot wounds, dental"emergen- Illbeheld inOshova nextmonth Wilderness First Aid course offered by St. nbulance ~The course is $150.00 | and is approximately 28 hours of instruction and is 'ends, shroom/berry Emergency.
