FE Sh ee a PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" - ... FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2000.- 23 Graduate student to help Friends of the Osprey keep tabs on the birds The Friends of the Osprey have a new tool to help in keeping track of nesting Osprey in our area. Tammy dePass, a Sir Sandford Fleming graduate has done a database and digital mapping system so that we are able to compile information and analyze the rise or fall of the Osprey population in the Kawartha. Ontario Hydro has always been very support- ive in helping to relocate Osprey nests that were in danger, either from elec- ~trocution of birds of by interfering with the electric supply to an area or com- munity. They have placed extra tall poles, extended poles, put extra protection on wires, and have placed nesting platforms on the tops of poles so that the birds would be safe as well as the public services. Anyone who knows of an Osprey nest in an unsafe location atop power poles is asked to please contact Ontario Hydro director Mr. Kris Cox (email: kris.cox@hydrol.com or tel: 888-871-3514) is handling the relocation nest program at this time. The nests now are due for relocation late in August or September for this year. It is important to the Friends of the Osprey that anyone who knows of any nesting Osprey to send a letter with a sketch map showing the location of that (those) nests. The Friends of the Osprey have recently done an aerial survey over the Kawarthas lakes June 26 and 28 covering the areas where nests are known and sometimes relatively inac- cessible. This flight checks the condition of nests, and the presence of parent Osprey and the number of their chicks. Unfortunately, the news is not good: many nests are empty, or destroyed, with only a few nests. replacing the destroyed ones. The Goose Bay area at the south end of Sturgeon Lake and the Scugog River downstream from Lindsay has had the Osprey popu- lation decline from a total of 18 nesting sites to only eight active nesting Osprey. This means that the popu- lation has dropped about 60 per cent for this area. We will be banding young birds during the first week of July in this particular area to better know the status of the eight nesting pairs.
