FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2000-13 by Marie Ann McCrea and Judy Irwin Editor's note: Charles Connell suffered a life-threatening injury at the Heavy Horse Sale at Kitchener, Ontario about two weeks ago. At the time of writing, be is in inten- stve care m the Kitchener bospital, It is not certain at this time that be will survive bis injuries, but bis family and friends are optomistic. For those people who are for- tunate enough to be acquainted - with Charles Connell and his wife Mary-Jo, shock, sadness and worry followed the news of his accident at the Heavy Horse Sale in Kitchener, ON. When we think of Charles Connell, the image of a hard working, hard playing, 'old west' cow- boy, with an incredible sense of humour comes to mind. He is the type of person that could have easily survived and prospered in the era of early ranching. His tenacity, imagination, knowledge, strength and spirit, along with Mary-Jo, have made their Double C Ranch in Omemee a success in many areas of the horse industry. As many people will agree, this is no small achievement. Formerly a contractor and master carpenter, Charles laid down his hammer and nails (commercially speaking of course. He is constantly help- ing others and working on his own buildings) to follow his dream of working full time with horses. From building his farm up, to breeding, buying and selling hors- es, Chatles constantly matched up the right horses with the right owners. He eventually turned to outfitting one to three day rides with the help of Mary-Jo and his children. His clients were numer- ous, coming from as close as just down the road to as far away as the US and Europe. He also started a trail riding company based at Heart Lake Lodge in Minden. In the last couple of years, Charles has concentrated his efforts on breeding quality Quarter Horses with his buckskin stallion "Poco", buying and selling, working with his amazing mule teams and obtaining contracts for Chuck Wagon rides. . Charles has an incredible aptitude for working with "hard to reach" horses. His patient and fearless and generous nature, whether training, giving advice or simply taking off the rough edges are qualities that have brought people to him. Most recently, he arranged and organized an all breed horse sale at the Lindsay Sale Barn, which was a resounding success. He has also organized seine very pleasant and popular "ride and drive" days. In the last couple of years, he has competed against some of the best at plowing matches and, despite being relatively new at the endeavor, done extremely well. So Charles, please don't check out that white light!! There are no words to convey our concern for you. We are all praying for you and your family. If ever a person deserves them it is you.
