It seems mere months ago that Scugog Township councillors were singing the blues, wondering how to ; sustain municipal services in a climate of declining provincial transfers, and downloading of services and responsibilities by Queen's Park. Now they can be forgiven for joining together to croon, "We've got a lot of what it takes to get along..." It's a pleasant situation to be in, this wondering how to best invest, save or spend the revenues projected from two new sources. Scugog is to be in receipt soon of monies from a realigned provincial offences system - that's tickets - and the proceeds from newly-installed slot machines at the Great Blue Heron Casino - that's gambling. The revenues could be substantial, so much so that the council is considering a number of specific funds into which the new money will be funneled. They're looking at banking for municipal projects, road improvements, and maybe even prop- erty tax breaks, among other things. Lord knows there are probably many, many people out there with fabulous ideas on how to spend the revenues, and the council should listen to them. For a long time proponents of a pool, a second ice pad, and other worthy projects have been told the dough's just not there. But restraint will be necessary, too. Because as we've seen, the political landscape in Ontario can change rapidly. It's best to be ready for anything. Field restoration was a team effort To the Editor: This past Saturday, June 24, the Scugog Soccer Association held their Grand Opening Ceremonies to mark their return to the main soccer fields. As club president, | had the privilege of hosting the ceremonies, and of person- ally receiving dozens and dozens of acco- lades afterwards, from parents and coach- es alike. | am pleased that our club's efforts were so well received, but would like to clarify that this was the culmination of a team effort. We are very fortunate to live in Scugog, with its strong sense of community. The celebration on Saturday, as well as other events we have planned, can only happen when a team of volunteers works together towards the common goal of improving our club's program and spirit. I am extremely proud of the efforts and accom- plishments of all these people. I would like to also thank some of that team that | overlooked on Saturday: Anne Zochodne, Karen Leaf, Julie Lewis, Darleen Hill, Nicole Honey, Cathie Dutton, Adam Sinclair and Neil King, who worked tire- lessly behind the scenes in various capac- ities to help make Saturday a success. In addition, | would like to acknowledge the tremendous and generous support we received from Reid's Independent and Tim Horton's. My apologies to anyone else that | may have overlooked. Many new individuals have come for- ward this year and volunteered their time. Although they may not always get the recognition they deserve, it is because of their efforts, combined with those of our "veterans," that the club has been able to do a lot of new and exciting things in 2000. To our 900 club members and parents, | would like to remind you that we are a 100 per cent pure volunteer organization. We are always on the lookout for new tal- ent, as each new helper increases our ability to build and improve the club. If you feel that you would like to posi- tively contribute to our community through our club, we would be happy to hear from you. You can contact us at 985- 7553 or email at scugogsoccer@aol.com. Have a great soccer season. Mike Lorish, Club President
