20 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 2000 Stress, stress and more stress Stress is a part of our daily activities, it is an ever present, universal feature of human life. Stress motivates us, challenges us, and forces us to adapt to our environ- ment. Yet the same demand that challenges us can also cause sleep loss, pain, and can leave us worn out. Why do some of us suffer more than others? The difference depends on how we interpret and respond to stress. Some fac- tors that can influence our interpretation and response are timing, perceived sup-' port, outcome and impor- tance. Stress is "the non-specif- ic response of the body and any demand made on it." Simply put, the body is try- ing to maintain the status quo or homeostasis. The stress response effects most systems in the body, even the immune system, thus making us more prone to flus and colds. The body What is Massage Therapy? has an old protective mech- anism known as "fight or flight" which prepares the body for battle by increas- ing heart rate, muscle tone, etc. Next time you get a scare from a friend, check your heart rate .. that is stress. So, that brings up the question, why can't we last forever under long periods of stress? Eventually the response systems in the body lose their effective- ness to adapt and return to normal. If many stressors are put on the body, the body is unable to return to normal thus causing long term health problems. How can we prevent this? Pay attention to what's going on. If you Jisten your body will tell you. If you have trouble concentrating, trouble sleeping, chronic pain and bowel dysfunc- tion, you could be a high stress candidate. Practice daily relaxation. Remember your "health buffers," exercise, diet and sleep. All of these can help, but sometimes we need a little more and that's where Registered Massage Therapy works. Massage Therapy decreases muscle tone and heart rate, increases diges- tion and circulation, and of course strengthens the over all immune system. Registered Massage Therapy is the key to mus- cular injury. Repetitive stress can cause serious muscular dysfunction and relief can be found with even a single treatment. So next time you fell your shoulders pulling up over our ears, remember mas- sage therapy can lower stress, and start you on the path to better health.
