28 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 2000 Seventh annual Scugog tournament scheduled for June 23-25 Opening pitch of Fields of Dreams fundraiser approaching By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Organizers are working fever- ishly as the opening pitch of the seventh annual Fields of Dreams slo-pitch tournament approach- es. The annual fundraiser, which sees proceeds invested in the Carolyn Best Ball diamonds near the Scugog Arena, takes place June 23, 24 and 25 at ball parks in Port Perry and throughout the township. It is hoped that around 75 teams will take part in the event, said organizer Frank Fielding. Mr. Fielding and his commit- tee organize a tournament that sees teams from both the town- ship and other communities com- pete in six divisions. They are competing for prize money in each category, but are also attempting to qualify for the Slo Pitch Ontario tournament. Scugog's event is attractive to teams in the area because of its qualifier status, said Mr. Fielding. "I think this is the only (quali- fier), basically, between Toronto and Port Hope," he said. It's a huge event, and schedul- ing is a huge task: After the reg- istration deadline of June 19, Mr. Fielding will schedule 75 teams in six divisions, who will play some 160 games on diamonds throughout the township. Organizers are also hoping to attract ball players and others to the Saturday night dance, being" held at the Scugog Arena. There's no cover charge for the event, at which DJ Pete Kneale will be playing tunes, and refreshments will be inexpensive. You don't have to be a partic- ipant in the tournament to come to the dance on Saturday, June 24. It gets underway at 8:30 p.m., and proceeds, as with the rest of the tournament, will go toward improvements to the ball dia- monds. Over the years Fields of Dreams has raised thousands of installing lights at the other dia- monds, said Mr. Fielding. The tournament is supported by the township, and local ball players pitch in to help run the Turn to Page 29 dollars toward the cause, money is invested in partnership with the township, and so far, one of the three diamonds at the field has seen lights fully installed.
