Canoeists from across the province and beyond have supported the Scugog Historical Society for the past 31 years, and local organizers are hoping to continue the success of Ontario's largest and longest-run- ning canoe race this year on june 3. Proceeds from the event help fund operations at the Scugog Shores Historical Museum. The biggest fundraiser of the year for the local museum, Canoe The Nonquon raised more than $6,000 last year, and organizers are hoping to top that in 2000. There is a $30 entry fee, but par- ticipants are encouraged to collect pledges prior to the event. Registration takes place at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry; partici- pants may either sign up during the evening hours on Friday (June 2), or starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday. There are various race categories to choose from, including competitive mens, women, and mixed to a recre- ational class. The race begins at the bridge over the Nonquon River on Scugog's 10th Concession Rd. From there, entrants make their way through the 26-kilo- metre journey, which includes the winding Nonquon River and then a sprint down the shoreline of Lake Scugog back to Palmer Park in Port Perry. Registration and pledge forms are available at Scugog"s Township Offices, The Port Perry Star, Scugog Memorial Public Library, Scugog Shores Museum, and Sunshine Pool and Fitness. EVERYONE WELCOME The young Port Perry native held off challenges last Sunday (May 28) after- noon from the seven other entrants in the 2000 Cup event to claim his third consecutive title. Since the event's inception in 1997, only The Antrim House Pub's Dave Hillier has won the race. Organized as a fundrais- er for the Scugog Memorial Public Library, the annual sailboat race has raised close to $2,500 for the local library in its short history. A total of $627.56 was raised during the 2000 event. Participants in the race must complete three laps around a triangular course on Lake Scugog just off the shores off Palmer Park in Port Perry in a set amount of time. aged to throw their sup- port behind their favourite racer by purchasing a tick- et in their name; three names will be drawn for cash prizes, with the remaining money going to the winning sailor and the library.
