So go the words to a hokey pop tune, which faded from the airwaves a long time ago. But they have some resonance today. Because we're getting to the point where you almost cannot see the landscape around you because of the signs. Advertising is virtually everywhere, and companies are looking to install it in the few places left untouched. They're even willing to build and install their own advertising vehicles, right on your street. A case in point is the proposal that came before Scugog Township councillors earlier this week. A company wants to install benches at 10 locations in and around the downtown core in Port Perry, and sell advertising space on them. Councillors are lukewarm to the idea, but have instructed staff to check into the proposal and report back. A good question to ask in the formulation of the report would be this: How much advertising do we really need? We're inundated with advertising. On the television, on the radio, popping up on our computer screfens, in newspapers and flyers that come in the mail and arrive at the end of the driveway, plastered on the boards during hockey games, on school buses, for crying out loud. Good for the councillors for realizing there is a point at which there can be too much advertising. Benches are a nice idea. But do they have to be billboards, too? By Walt Radda NO ROCKY! Durham Rent Bank is here to help To the Editor: Re: Region establishes fund for homeless in northern area (Friday, May 12, 2000): As the co-ordinator of the Durham Rent Bank and the Durham Community Trust, | would like to clarify some details about these funds. First, both are interest-free loan programs, part of a homelessness prevention strategy intended to help Durham residents stay in their existing housing, rather than winding up in shelters or on the street. Secondly, applicants to these funds do not have to go to Ajax. Applications are available from locations in the north, such as social services, the information centres, hospitals, churches and the food banks. As well, some visiting nurses and other professionals who make in-home visits may have a supply. The staff of the programs are located in Ajax but the telephone and fax numbers to access service are displayed prominently. And, we have offered to make presenta- tions to the agencies whose clients may need this kind of help. Our presentations include information and help on accessing subsidized housing, finding affordable housing in the private sector, information on seniors housing, as well as the home- lessness prevention strategies. The Rent Bank,Community Trust Fund, and Housing Help Durham staff are pleased to be included on any housing and home- lessness initiatives directed at helping the vulnerable segment of our Region.
