Leslie Bradley earned scholarship for program Young singer is selected for elite program at Banff Centre By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star The Banff Centre of Fine Arts, set amongst the scenic Rocky Mountains, will be home for Leslie Bradley over the next six weeks. A graduate of Port Perry High School, Ms Bradley will be graduating this month from the University of Toronto, where she has completed a four-year Bachelor of Music Performance Degree. And now she's off for a further training in an integration program of contemporary music at the fine arts cen- tre. Ms Bradley, one of 12 people selected from across Canada, applied for' the program last January, and performed before an audition panel. The panel travels acréss Canada and the U.S. seeking potential applicants every year. The decision to apply was easy, she said. "I haven't done a lot of contemporary music. It's 2000/2001! Water. And in Banff she will work under some of the best instructors on the continent, many of them directors from the Canadian Opera Company and graduates from Yale University. Ms Bradley is looking forward to her stint at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts: "It's intensive work, study- ing Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, but it will be fun. | can't wait to begin." Ms Bradley was award- ed a scholarship by the Banff Centre of Fine Arts which pays for 75 per cent of the cost of the program. Her food and lodging are also included. it won't be all work. On the weekends she will have the use of a recre- ational facility, and she's looking forward to some hiking in the mountains. This will be Ms Bradley's second trip to the west. A few years ago she went to a competition in Calgary with PPHS's Jazzmerize. She's been involved in music forever, it seems, and comes by it naturally. While her parents Jill and Paul are talented musical- ly, Leslie's grandparents, Willie and Betty Stone, have been known for their musical talents, and were recently honoured at Greenbank United Church for giving a lifetime of music in the community. At Ms Bradley's gradua- tion recital on April 1, she had the honour of achiev- ing the highest mark in her class, an amazing 86 per cent. Supported by family and many friends from Port Perry she was really pleased, as the two-hour recital was based on an entire year's work. A person who has been a significant part of Ms Bradley's life has been her voice teacher, Mary Morrison. "She's a wonderful mentor, and has definitely been instrumental in my success," said Ms Bradley. Ms Bradley left for the West on May 7, and will be finished the pro- gram on june 18. Next fall she is thinking about attending the two- year Opera Division pro- gram at the University of Toronto. "Music has been my life, and I want to make the most of it," she said.
