tao ~~ RE ro ---- br me Ws A PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 12, 2000-13 Botanica comes to Port Perry Season begins at end of May Uxbridge Concert Band seeks members The Uxbridge Community Concert Band is looking for musicians, both young and old, to be a part of a community tra- dition. Since 1992, the UCCB has been a summertime opportunity for people from in and around Uxbridge to perform in a variety of ways, from a concert band to a trio. What started as a way for local music students to "keep in shape" has become an exciting mix- ture of people from across the region, of vari- ous ages and talents and interests. "Our recruitment base is growing," says Steffan Brunette, director of the ensemble. "In 1992, we advertised only to the local high school and elementary schools. Word has spread, and we've gained faithful members from Port Perry, Beaverton, Sunderland, and Stouffville." The objective of the ensemble is neither to compete nor to play on a major concert stage. The season only runs from May 24 to the end of August, running with a single rehearsal a week. By the end of the sum- mer, the band will have played an outdoor band- shell concert in Port Perry (as part of the "Concerts in the Park" series), as well as two indoor recitals, one of which has always been produced in Uxbridge. Last year, the second recital was per- formed in Stouffville. The timing of the band's season is to coin- cide with the summer hol- idays. Students who nor- mally perform weekly CHRIS HALUPORT PERRY STAR Erica Viezner-Nyman opened her new shop, Botanica, to the public on May 2 after weeks of preparing. Located at-229 Queen St., Botanica fea- tures garden-inspired goods, as well as fresh flow- ers. Botanica is open seven days a week; and can be reached by calling 985-6200. Adults who want to pick up that old flute, sax- ophone, or trombone from their school days may find the short three- month season perfect for getting back in shape without feeling commit- ted for a longer time- frame. "We perform music for all sorts of tastes," says Mr. Brunette. "We cover the classics, some modern music, some popular, and some nonsense novelty num- Invent It. SEAR Rao bers. The goal is to have fun, but we won't apolo- gize if anyone learns any- thing along the way." Best of all, member- ship in the ensemble is free. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin on May 24, and run every Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. Posters and pamphlets are available to students through their music teachers.
