4 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 5, 2000 2000 Ride For Sight revs up By Chris Hall Port Perry Star One of the world's leading fundraisers for eye research in North America, Ride For Sight, is set to take to the road once again. Scheduled to take place June 17, the annual ride will see riders from across the province travel by bike to Collingwood, where a large gathering is held at the Greater Northern Exhibition Fairgrounds. There, enter- tainment will be provided by groups such as the Jeff Healey Band and even Port Perry's own Midlife Crisis. More than $500,000 was raised for The Foundation Fighting Blindness (formerly known as the RP Foundation) by approximately 6,000 riders last year, and organizers are hoping to top that in 2000. "Last year was the largest ride yet, and we want to do even better than that," said Dr. Darryl Workman, a local optometrist who co-ordinates the local ride. "We want to get the word out about this event and hopefully attract even more riders to it. We want to raise $750,000 this year," he said, noting that more than 30 local riders participated in the 1999 run. "It's a great cause and a fun ride." Local riders will meet at the Durham Arms Pub (56 Water St.) in Port Perry at 8 a.m. on june 17. Breakfast will be available at a small cost, and the ride will kick off between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. From Port Perry, riders will follow Simcoe St. north through Woodville, where they'll swing west on County Rd. 15 to Hwy. 12. From there, they will travel to Orillia, gas up, and then turn west onto County Rd. 22 (Horseshoe Valley Rd.) at Prices Corner. Riders will then travel to Hwy. 26 through Stayner and to the GNE. The ride is about 180 kilometres and should take just under two hours to complete, said Dr. Workman. Riders looking to take a longer route can travel to the International Centre via the 407 and then join up with larger groups heading to Collingwood that day. Anyone looking for information on the Ride For Sight or to pick up a sponsor form can visit Dr. Workman's office at 189 North St. in Port Perry or call 985-1361. FOR | JUNE, 17 INFO. Provincial plan will cost board A new accountability plan for school buildings will cost money before it saves any, Durham District School Board trustees have been told. In presenting the new Accountability Reporting program to trustees at Monday night's meeting, facilities superintendent Jack Massie said the reports will cover all aspects of new buildings, maintenance, and renova- tions to older schools. Report sheets on everything from the cost of new schools to the tem- perature in classrooms is to be reported on an ongoing basis to the province. In order to qual- ify for funding grants, schools will have to file reports on how and when classrooms are being used, and what the cost of cleaning supplies are. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew asked Mr. Massie about costs to the board. "Obviously, this changes the way we gather and process data," said Mrs. Drew. "Is there any funding coming to cover the cost of the change to the... system?" Mr. Massie said his department is in the process of finding the computer software pro- grams necessary to com- pile the reports for the province, and that no cost had yet be determined. "Yes, this will involve cost to us," Mr. Massie said. "| believe there is no funding given (by the province) to assist us in gathering this informa- tion." The reports will be gathered on an ongoing basis and be used by the province to determine eli- gibility levels for educa- tion funding.
