After listening to boaters from across the coun- try, the Canadian Coast Guard, with the support of Canada's personal water- craft manufacturers, has introduced a set of new rules for personal watercraft which are aimed at making boating safer and even more enjoyable. As of April 1, 1999, all personal watercraft operators in Canada must be at least 16 years old. In addition, all operators of personal watercraft (16 years or older), must have proof of operator competency by Sept. 15, 2002. The new Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations will require that operators carry proof of competency with them at all times. Proof of com- petency can take one of three forms: 1. A pleasure craft operator card. 2. Proof of having taken a boating safety course prior to April 1, 1999. 3. A completed rental boat safety checklist. You can obtain an operator card by successfully completing an accredited safe boating course. Boaters also have the option of attempting the test from an accredited safe boating course provider without first completing the safe boating course. for a list of accredited course providers in your area, visit the Coast Guard website at www.ccg.gcc.gc.ca or call 1-800-267-6687.
