Jt | : Nn NP -- FpSS------------------------ a Ee -- 2 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 2000 Businessman, teacher well-known in community Bill Brock seriously injured in motorcycle crash By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star A well-known Port Perry resident and businessman is in a Toronto hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a motorcycle accident north of town Monday night. Bill Brock, 68, was riding his 1984 Honda Goldwing south on Country Rd. 2 near the hamlet of Sonya when he was involved in a collision with a car at the road's intersection with Durham Rd. 13. Accounts of the accident, which was witnessed by other motorists, indicate that Mr. Brock's bike came into contact with the eastbound car, being driven by a 29-year-old Uxbridge man. Mr. Brock stayed with the motorcycle as it careened out of control after the colli- sion. The driver of the car was not injured. Mr. Brock was taken to hospital in Port Perry, and later airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, where listed in critical but stable condi- tion. Mr. Brock is well- known as the patriarch "of the Bill Brock family which has operated Brock's department store in downtown Port Perry for several generations. He also taught at Port Perry High School for a number of years. Family friend Paul Arculus said Mr. he was initially - Brock's wife and daughters were keeping an around-the-clock vigil at Sunnybrook. Although he has regained conscious- ness, head injuries sustained in the acci- dent have left him unaware of his sur- roundings, said Mr. Arculus. "He's been removed from the critical list, but he's still in serious condition," Mr. Arculus said Wednesday morning. "Although conscious, he hasn't regained his lucidity yet." Mr. Brock also sustained broken ribs, and a punctured lung, said Mr. Arculus. The lung was collapsed, which also cre- ated great concern. Still, family members and doctors were hopeful for Mr. Brock's recovery. "Neither of the injuries are regarded as life-threatening," said Mr. Arculus. "However, he is in very, very rough shape." Mr. Brock had recently purchased the 1984 Goldwing, a bigger bike than the model he had ridden for sometime. It was the size of the bike, and the fact he wasn't immediately thrown from it, that may have mitigated Mr. Brock's injuries somewhat. "Fortunately, he held onto the bike," said Mr. Arculus. The Durham Regional Police traffic management unit was called in to inves- tigate the accident. As of press time, word on whether or not charges would be laid could not be obtained. Alcohol was not a factor in the inci- dent, police said. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call the traffic management unit at 579-1520, ext. 5267. tery 4 Dr, V6, loaded, quad seats, 81K. 96 DODGE EXT SIT 2WD Red, V8, auto, loaded, 98 K 97 BUICK CENTURY CUS1 Burgundy, V6, loaded, CD, 13 K. $15,900 B+ Huvy. = V 4 Wes DRIVE A LI} ITE SAVE FSA Blue, 350 V8, auto, air, 119 K *17,900 $16,900 | 96 CHEV SILVERADO EXT.
