A draft document has been completed by mem- bers of the ethnocultural committee. They began examining the issue after Durham District School Board trustee Jane Weist put forth a motion last year, calling for a way to "address the spiritual component of Durham students." Ms Weist originally called for prayer, but amended the motion to read "inspirational read- ings" last June. While prayer in Ontario's public schools is not allowed by the Education Act, the first draft submitted to trustees contains several prayers that begin with and refer to God and Our Lord. Ms Weist, an Oshawa trustee, initially tried to block media access to the first draft report saying it was not yet a public docu- ment. But board chair Doug Ross supplied a copy. "This is a public docu- ment in development," he said. "I have no prob- lem with the public see- ing it." Ms Weist later said that she was concerned that committee members had not yet been given copies, while all trustees were given first draft reports at last Monday night's board meeting. She said she "didn't want the committee to be upset that they didn't have copies." The document is still open. to amendment, and must meet provincial guidelines before it can | be used in schools. The 'cost of the document | development is expected to exceed $10,000 includ- ing the cost of hiring a staff member to check on copyright issues for pro- posed material. A final document is not expected to be available before the start of the 2000/2001 school year.
