By the turn of the century, his compassion for the people and his growing love of the land surrounding them, prompted him to establish what became known as the Grenfell Mission. The Grenfell Mission was a religious mission. It was to raise the economic conditions of the people, as they were very poor and could not afford clothing, food or medical services. The assembled rug kits were given to the native people to hook the familiar Grenfell mats. When they were completed, they would receive either food, clothing or medical services. By 1914, this was well established and the completed hooked rugs were shipped to the United State to be sold. Other items were made as well, such as bookends, paper mache dolls and weather vanes. Arguably the best collection of Grenfell textiles and accessories will be coming to market at the Bowmanville Antiques and Folk Art Sale April 21 and 22, 2000. The collection, gathered by Robin Moore over a period of 20 years, has been consigned to textile dealer Carol Tlefer who will be exhibiting the collection at the show and offering it for sale. Robin Moore is known to be a Canadian authority on the Grenfell mission and the products that came from it. Over the years, she sought only the very best examples to include in her collection, which makes this sale all the more important.
