4 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 2000 Daffodil sales taking place here today Cancer Society begins annual April canvass By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Canadian Cancer Society kicks off its annual fundraising effort with Daffodil Days, today. The East Durham Unit, which is comprised of Oshawa, Clarington, and Scugog Township, raised more than $240,000 last year for cancer research. A bunch of eight daffodils can be purchased for $4 from volunteers today. Anyone who misses buying flowers on Friday can pick them up at local businesses and schools. Almost $4,000 was raised in 1999 from daffodil sales in Scugog. Throughout April, Cancer Society volunteers will conduct their annual residential canvass, the most success- ful campaign of the year. "The residential campaign raised more than $39,000 in Scugog Township last year, which we were very happy with," said East Durham Unit manager Joan Skelton. "We always do very well in the Scugog area; per capita, we usually get higher amounts of donations in the rural areas, including Scugog." Looking ahead, the Canadian Cancer Society will also hold their sec- ond annual Great Ride 'n Stride to Beat Cancer on June 4. Participants are urged to ride, walk, run, or inline skate along the waterfront trail beginning at Heydenshore Park in Whitby. The East Durham Unit is looking to raise more than $25,000 at this event. "April is definitely our busiest month. We have hundreds of volun- teers helping us out," said Ms Skelton. Anyone interested in volunteering, participating or looking for informa- tion on these events are asked to con- tact the East Durham Unit at 725-1166.
