2 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 2000 He blames province's corporate tax Hydro rates bound to rise: Moffatt Hydro rates in Port Perry could go up by 7 per cent when Scugog Hydro is taken over by the municipality, according to Mayor Doug Moffatt. Speaking at a meeting of the finance committee Monday moming, the mayor pinned the reason for the increase squarely on the shoulders of the Conservative government at Queen's Park. The government plans to slap the new hydro utili- ties with a corporate tax, something that was not charged before, said Mayor Moffatt. He said Queen's Park is committed to eliminating in 10 years the $22 billion debt run up by Ontario Hydro. Presently, Scugog Hydro supplies power to cus- tomers in most of the town of Port Perry, while cus- tomers beyond the utility borders receive their power directly from Ontario Hydro. : The Scugog utility is slated to be taken over the municipality this year, and that is when the corporate tax will be applied. The mayor said there are a lot of long-term benefits possible to hydro consumers with this take-over. However, in the short term, there will be rate increases, he warned. One such benefit is that the new, de-regu- lated utilities will be free to buy their power from the supplier of choice, and that could see savings for indi- vidual customers. McClelland Port Perry Star Is Nestleton destined to become the hub for beach volleyball in Scugog Township? There's a distinct possi- bility thanks to the Ontario Summer Games, slated for August 10-13 this year. Scugog is the site for all beach volleyball action at the Summer Games, and that means the construc- tion of four regulation size courts to handle the sport. Township officials are now in the process of try- ing to find a suitable loca- tion for the four courts and such venues as the fair- grounds, the Port Perry Legion andthe Scugog Arena have been suggest- ed. The lakefront has been ruled out because of lack of a site large enough to handle the volleyball event. Mayor Doug Moffatt thinks the new park being developed in, Nestleton should also get considera- tion for the four courts. Speaking at a meeting of the finance committee Monday morning, the mayor suggested the Cartwright Fields as a possible venue as the courts would remain for community use after the Summer Games are over. A group of volunteers is developing the new park on some 27 acres of land north and west of the Nestleton community hall. Baseball diamonds, a Moffatt soccer field and basket- ball court are in the plans for the park, and the mayor said permanent beach volleyball courts would be a suitable addi- "tion. Brenda Robinson of the township parks and recre- .ation department, the municipal liaison with the Summer Games organiz- ers, said Scugog is now getting all the beach vol- leyball 'action because officials have decided to move - the water skiing event away from Lake Scugog to a venue in Uxbridge. Officials opted to move the water skiing events away from Lake Scugog because of low water lev- els and the weed growth in the lake, Mrs. Robinson - said. The location of the beach volleyball venue has not yet been finalized as there are several loca- tions now being consid- ered, she said. But Cartwright Fields is now on the list.
