PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 2000 - 23 Chocolate fundraiser's coming up On Sunday, May 7 the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region will be hosting its ninth annual Chocolate Lovers Luncheon at Cullen Gardens in Whitby from noon to 3 p.m. -This event is a fundraiser to assist with the provision of support services for care- givers, friends and family members, and for Alzheimer research. The goal is to raise $5,000. "We feel very confident that we will meet our goal or to surpass it," says Brenda McConnell, executive director. Tickets will be sold at $35 per person and due to a waiting list last year, people and related dementia are encouraged to purchase their ticket well in advance. To purchase a ticket, call (905) 576-2567 or stop by the Alzheimer Society office at 419 King Street West (in the Oshawa Centre), Suite 205. A delicious lunch of eight ounce chick- en with a lemon herb sauce, vegetables, roasted potatoes, and a garden salad will be served. Last year's fashion show was a success, and will be included once again this year. Local stores including Addition- Elle, Audrey Janes and Sears will partici- pate in the fashion show, exhibiting the latest trends and styles. "A chance for one of the five door prizes, a decadence of chocolate, and fun will all be included. Each person will have a chance to win. cash prizes, and the grand prize of a: weekend getaway with dinner and the- atre tickets. Donations for balloon prizes are need- ed. To date donations from Home Hardware, Whitby Massage Therapy Clinic, Parkwood Estate and Gallery, The Body Shop, Kids Zone Family Fun; The / Bay, Tim Hortons and Cullen Gardens have been received. Today, one in 13 over the age of 65, or over 300,000 Canadians have Alzheimer Disease and related demen- tias. In 2030, this number will increase to three-quarters of a million. Arthritis management sessions to be held by local Society The Arthritis Society is launching two sessions of the Arthritis Self Management Program starting April 26 at Cana Hall, Faith Place, 44 William St. West. The first session will be held on Wednesdays from | to 3 p.m., the second, from 7 to 9 p.m. The program runs for six weeks. The classes are specifically designed to help people control their arthritis through proven pain management technique and are taught by trained volunteers. Ten to 15 participants are led through discussions about pain management, diet, exercise, stress, relaxation and other con- cerns for people with all forms of arthritis.
