Schools pull hunting handbooks By Rik Davie Special to the Star The Durham District School Board has ordered handbooks on hunting which include instructions on loading and firing handguns pulled from schools across the region. The books were sent to schools across Ontario by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). They include a chapter on types and uses of ammunition, building of snares to trap and kill small animals, and sev- eral chapters on the use of guns, including handguns. The books were sent directly to school libraries and not through the board offices, according to staff. Director of Education Grant Yeo said that no copies of the book where sent to board officials or principals, and that his staff learned of them through the media. "When we contacted our schools we found that, in at least one case, a principal had already seen the book and removed it pend- ing board review," Mr. Yeo said. "I am sure that would have occurred as librarians and principals became aware of the problem when reviewing the material." Mr. Yeo said the books have been removed from all Durham schools: "I have asked that those books be removed pending a further study of their content." Mr. Yeo said that given his personal review of the content of the book regarding handgun use, "lI don't envision any circumstances under which these books would be returned to the shelf in their present form."
