Halifax, here we come... | [GARY BAGSHAW | Cartwright High School students are off to the Atlantic Music Festival next month By Meghan Kyte Port Perry Star Cartwright High School's Senior Concert Band will be -. embarking on a trip late this spring to Halifax, to compete in a major competition. Members of the CHS Band have been raising funds for their trip to the Atlantic Music Festival since September of last year, and planning for the journey for more than a year. Music instructor John Beirness has been leading the high school's bands and choirs for more than 10 years. Under his direction, the CHS music program has fared well in such competitions, collecting several awards. "We've been to Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, and Quebec," said Mr. Beirness. "Halifax is another destination to add to our list." The Atlantic Music Festival sees competitors desig- nated in categories of difficulty. "This year we are in the B-400 Senior," said Mr. Beirness. | The band will play three pieces, and a short adjudi- cation and clinic will follow. An awards ceremony and dance is scheduled for Saturday, April 29, and each band will learn their standing. "Our selections this year show off our skill, and prac- tice," said Mr. Beirness. The CHS Senior Band will be playing Bach's Prelude and Fugue, Silvercrest, and They Came Sailing. "Festivals are great for our band," said Mr, Beirness. "We get to show our skill and musicianship." OAC students are looking forward to the trip, having participated in many music festivals over the years. "The festivals are awesome," said Sara Brown. Grade 10 students who have never been to this festival before are looking forward to the trip. "This will be a new experience for us, and we're very excited," said Ryan Nesbitt. "We'll get to meet new people and listen to other bands," added Carrie King. Fundraising for the trip began last year, with the music students selling cookie and muffin dough. A craft sale was held at the Blackstock Rec Centre in December, and a Lions Club dinner was served by band members. The band is currently looking for sponsors or dona- tions to help with expenses. "We are always looking for sponsors; tax receipts can be issued," said Mr. Beirness. The next fundraiser is a traditional dinner called Music Feast, next weekend. "Music Feast is a full roast beef dinner, all you can eat. There are raffles, and a silent auction with the master of ceremonies, Eric Fletcher," said Mr. Beimess. "March 25 will be the big social event for the Blackstock calender." Tickets are on sale now. Call Cartwright High School for more info or tickets at 986-4241. The C.H.S. Senior Concert Band recently attended the Sunderland music festival, where they earned a silver medal. This will the second time over 11 years of attending competitions that the band has flown to its destination. "The option was flying versus driving, and the deci- sion was flying," said Mr. Beirness.
