The notice of motion, put forth by Oshawa trustee Susan Shetler at Monday night's meeting, calls for a resolution stating "that the Durham District School Board pass a Zero Tolerance policy." Under questioning from board vice-chair Bobbie Drew and trustee Liz Roy about the meaning of zero tolerance in regards to violence, Ms Shetler did not clearly define what consequences her motion might dictate for violent behaviour. Ms Shetler said earlier that she wants a policy simi- lar to one implemented a few years ago in Scarborough. That policy allowed for the permanent expulsion of students participating in violent acts or bringing weapons to school. Staff at the board were asked to obtain copies of the Scarborough document. Ms Shetler has, in the past, called for the locking of school doors during class hours at secondary schools, and the possible use of metal detectors and guards in school buildings. Jane Wiest, an Oshawa trustee who tried unsuccess- fully at an earlier meeting to bring a similar motion for- ward, said that it is time for the issue to be addressed. "Students are being bullied in our schools," said Ms Wiest. "The ones being bullied are usually the smarter ones who the teachers like. Members of my own family have been vic- tims of this, and we cannot put our heads in the sand." Ajax trustee Brian Clarke, who is also a Toronto police officer, agreed that the issue needs to be addressed. "I think that recent events bring it to the forefront," he said. Mr. Clarke was referring to a recent shooting incident at a Toronto school that left three students wounded. "It (the problem of violence) won't get any better by delaying this," he said. The board asked for a report from staff, and the mat- ter will be addressed at an upcoming meeting of trustees. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew said that she is willing to look at the current policies in place. "Anything we can do to help this problem, | am all for, provided that we do not take away the ability of our staff to deal with each situation as it comes along," said Mrs. Drew.
