Our bodies have the wonderful ability to store fuel in the form of fatty deposits. This allowed prehistoric man increased survivability until he or she reached the age of reproduction. However, in these times a former asset has become a future liability. We live very much longer than our ancestors and many of the chronic conditions associated with obesity, such as, diabetes, Atherosclerosis and heart disease are cheating us of long term personal growth by denying us the benefits of long and healthy lives. Many of you have set weight loss goals for the new year - but how many will achieve successful results? With the proper information most people can acquire the necessary discipline and skills to achieve healthy weight reduction and improved fitness. ) People seeking weight loss are faced with similar anxieties as those trying to quit smoking. Procrastination is common. Your body becomes accustomed to old habits and wants to maintain a familiar statis. It takes tremendous personal commitment and resolve to lose weight; but those who are successful will feel great personal achievement and renewed self-confidence, in addition to much improved health, energy and even greater longevity. The best time to begin important health changes for yourself is today. Be cautious of diets which allow you to eat anything and count only calories. They do not provide balanced nutrition and teach nothing about proper eating habits. Starvation or very low calorie diets encourage your body to break down muscle mass for fuel. Your basal metabolic rate lowers to conserve energy and thereby further reduces your ability to burn fat. High carbohydrate diets stimulate the production of insulin, and guess what; one of insulin's functions is to store blood glucose (carbs) as fat. Super high protein diets force your body to burn ketones (fat) as fuel but do not provide you with enough glycogen (carbs) to power your muscles or your brain. They are often high in fats, which you should be trying to reduce. Is there any hope for people trying to lose weight? Absolutely and emphatically, yes! The key to weight loss, improved health and increased longevity, is a controlled balanced diet accompanied by regular exercise. Eating regular small meals and snacks to raise basal metabolic rate and control blood sugar levels are important practices to adopt, as our metabolic rate increases slightly every time we eat. Eat complex carbohydrates such as whole grain products, brown rice, potatoes and vegetables. Some essential fat is necessary. Fish and olive oil are good sources. Protein is often accompanied by saturated fat. Trim fat off meats before cooking and eat only lean poultry, fish and red meat. Legumes are a good source of low fat protein and why protein supplementation may help some people with hunger cravings. If you are exercising to lose weight, remember, protein builds muscle mass and muscle mass burns calories. Drink plenty of water, not soda, coffee or tea. Aerobic exercise will help to burn fat, but resistance training, weights and machines will trim, tone and shape your body by increasing muscle mass, which burns more calories! Remember, the key to successful weight loss is a calorie controlled balanced diet accompanied by a regular exercise program. Live long, be healthy and prosper!
